Yes, we know. Every single blog post that touches on the concept of branding starts out by mentioning the obvious: Branding is more than a logo.

Been there, done that. If you do want to read about it, you can head here and soak up the info!

But for now, here are the key takeaways:

1. Customers take one look at your product packaging, website, business card, etc., and form an opinion in about 10 seconds.
2. It is the first thing customers see and the very thing that helps them form an opinion about your business.

If you’re reading this blog post, you’re probably here because you already realize that branding goes way beyond the scope of getting your admin to create a clipart logo for your business, right? Or, maybe you’re trying to figure out why customers aren’t buying your product or service.

Regardless, we’re here to provide you with some unique and tangible ways to successfully brand your pet business that go beyond the generic advice out there that informs you that “branding is more than a logo.”

But, first, let’s talk about WHY branding is important. What does it even do for your business? Why is it worth the investment of time and/or money?

1. It sets you apart from ALL of the other pet businesses out there (competition is fierce out there in the pet industry).

2. It creates a memorable experience for viewers. This experience allows them to recognize future advertisements or social media posts that could lead to purchases or direct web searches.

3. It creates brand loyalty. If you find customers or clients that align with your branding, they’ll be more likely to be brand loyal and come back again.

4. It communicates directly to the people you WANT to purchase from you. This is especially important for service-based businesses. If you’re purposeful with a branding strategy that aligns with your target market, you’ll start getting the customers you’re specifically trying to work with, compared to just general “pet owners.”

“Simply put, your brand is your promise to your customer. It tells them what they can expect from your products and services, and it differentiates your offering from that of your competitors. Your brand is derived from who you are, who you want to be and who people perceive you to be.” - Entpreneur.com

Alright, let’s get into the tangible steps you can take to upscale your branding, even if you’re just getting started.

Tangible Tip #1: Start With What Makes You Different.

We are business owners, which means we have a certain level of confidence in ourselves to provide a great product or service to customers. Right?

It can be hard to shine through that lens when all you see are other similar pet businesses out there. The pet industry is one of the most competitive ones out there.

So, how can you highlight what makes you awesome?

First, STOP comparing yourself to others. Yes, there is some benefit to seeing what your competitors are doing, but don’t let it consume you. You may find yourself imitating their beliefs and business goals, which does nothing to help you differentiate yourself. In fact, it actually defeats the purpose of creating a successful business.

Second, take a look at what service you LOVE doing the most. What lights you up? Chances are what brings you happiness in your business is what customers will love about you, too.

Tangible Tip #2: Dig Deep Into Yourself.

We see a lot of hesitancy towards sharing ourselves. But, branding can and should be personal. People don’t buy from businesses, they buy from people.

Answer these key questions:

  1. Why did you start your business?
  2. What led you in this direction?
  3. Why do you want to help people or solve a problem for them?
  4. Who do you love working with?
  5. What goals do you have your business?
  6. What do you want to be known for?

The challenge with these questions is that a lot of people tend to breeze over it and answer simply, rather than really taking the time to get the bottom of all of these questions. We guarantee, if you actually sit down and honestly write all of these answers out, you’ll find something unique to use for your branding.

Maybe you’ll notice repetitive wording or similar feelings that pull across all answers. These are extremely important to piecing together a successful branding strategy.

Tangible Tip #3: Create A Pinterest Board

Pinterest is an amazing place to go when you’re trying to craft your branding strategy. We actually use it, too! Start by creating a board. Then, begin pinning things that speak to you in relation to your business.

You may find yourself repeating similar colors, tones, patterns, and visuals. Take the relevant information you know about your business and the work you did in the other steps above and pin from there.

Tangible Tip #4: Piece Together The Details

Here comes the fun part, and here are some of my favorite resources:

1. Choosing a color palette that works for your brand.

2. Behind the scenes of the design process.

This is when the creativity comes into play. Piecing together the logo, typeface, brand style, and more. If you’re needing some extra help here, we’ve got your back.

Tangible Tip #5: Get Brand Photos

This works wonders to show your audience that you are professional and legit. Not only is it professional, but consistently branded photography can also help you become recognizable. Yes, high-quality stock photography can work, but it can also be confusing for your potential customers because they lack any relation to your specific business.

We can help with this!

If this is out of your price range, here are some alternatives:

- Try an exchange of services with someone you know who needs your product or service

- Hire a student photographer

- Have a friend with a nice camera? BOOM!

Ever heard of the Marketing Rule of 7? It says that a potential customer needs to see your message or advertisement approximately seven times before making a purchase decision. Now, I don’t know about you, but we’d love to make that significantly lower. I think a brand that stands out would help, don’t you?
