Barkitecture, It Came, It Went, We’re Sad

Keeping the Momentum

If you are a lover of dog products like me, then you probably closely follow dog blogs like Dog Milk and try to find the newest and most unique stuff for your fur children. Let’s be honest, we all want our pups to be the coolest on their block.

That is why I was pumped when I saw an article for Barkitecture on Dog Milk’s blog, along with a link to their Kickstarter page. They coined themselves as the “first affordable designer dog house.” I mean look at those colors and shapes! They are literally perfection! Not only are they made from non-toxic material, they can be used both indoor and outdoor.

Now I know a lot of people saw this and were as excited as I was and because of peaked public interest, Barkitecture was featured on blogs like Core77 (for you non-designers, this is the holy land of architecture industrial design!). They gained huge momentum and people were taking notice. I wanted to write about this brand because they embody everything I believe in. A love for dogs, good design along with a fun and creative outlook on life. So this blog post was originally supposed to be about the product and what you can learn from it.

But to my surprise, when I went back to revisit the old article and Kickstarter page, I found out Barkitecture had canceled their funding page with no explanation and just vanished into thin air! I am sad; not only because I wanted one of these beautiful dog houses or because I wanted to share it with all of you, but because another creative entrepreneur lost the momentum.

I am not sure what happened to them, but there is a lesson to be learned.

No matter how much publicity andno matter how many people are talking about you, don’t ever let that slow you down. Videos go viral and the next day are forgotten. If your business is banking on something like Kickstarter or going viral on social media, have a plan in place for what happens next. In other words, be strategic. The only person who can make your business succeed is you. So, what started out as a product review of a stylish dog house that caught my eye, it turned into some self-reflection about my own small business. A reminder, never lose the momentum.

And to the people of Barkitecture, if you are out there, #BringTheHousesBack (can we get this trending please?). Because I was really looking forward to owning one!
